Hotel Review: Andaz Hotel West Hollywood / Los Angeles

(deutsche Version) Although I visit the US east coast a lot more regularly, today a look at the Andaz Hotel in West Hollywood/ Los Angeles CA. “Andaz” is the latest and hippest brand by the Hyatt Group and this hotel is the third of its kind in the United States. The only other Andaz properties are on Wallstreet and Fifth Avenue in New York. Compared to conventional hotel concepts, Andaz attempts to convey a feeling of ‘arriving home’. In the mornings, Coffee is available for free in the lobby and so are fresh fruit as well as other drinks throughout the day. Additionally, a ‘wine hour’ in the evening encourages guests to try local wines free of charge.

Check-In:

… is very much different. Usually, upon arrival, a guest gets checked-in at the reception, Andaz, however, has dedicated “hosts” who will take care of all those formalities while the guest can unwind in the lobby lounge, taking advantage of the first free drink. The entire procedure takes place in this setting, with the host checking guests in on an iPad, which even includes the coding of room keys. The hotel and its amenities: When entering the lobby it immediately becomes clear that this is not just a typical hotel. A guest arriving here for the first time might be surprised realising that there is no reception desk. Instead a couple of employees await guests with their iPads in-hand. This is precisely Andaz’ philosophy: There is no generic lobby, at the Andaz hotel this space is inspired by a nicely furnished living room, which is not only supposed to be the entrance hall to the hotel but a place for guests to relax and spend time. With 239 rooms and suites it is surely one of Los Angeles’ larger hotels in this category, however still manages to retain the charm of a boutique hotel. Some of the amenities provided include free WiFi access for guests, free non-alcoholic drinks from the minibar, a complementary newspaper as well as free local phone calls. Yet another distinctive feature is the hotel’s rooftop pool.

Particularly after a heavy day’s work or an exhausting shopping spree, it is a pure pleasure to unwind on top of the 14 story building, going for a swim and enjoying the view over Los Angeles. The pool area also offers a bar providing small snacks and drinks. Naturally, and as one would expect in Hollywood, Andaz offers a fitness centre, which is open 24 hours, allowing a workout virtually around the clock, no matter if day or night. On the ground floor, restaurant “RH” with an adjacent bar serves breakfast, which is either served as a buffet or à la carte.

The rooms:

The 239 rooms and suites are divided into different categories. These start with standard rooms which are offered with either a king-size or two queen-size beds. In addition to that, bathrooms differ based on the room category meaning that there are some layouts with a walk-in shower in addition to the bath tub.

There is little difference between floor level, as views from any level above the fourth are not obstructed by any other buildings. An additional plus of these rooms with a view are room-height window fronts equipped with seating areas allowing exceptional views. Suites offer quite a lot more space compared to standard rooms, as living-room and bedroom are separated. During my stay these days, I was living in a spacious room with a fantastic view – regular readers will know that I value a good view a lot higher than mere space, but here in the Andaz, both are equally outstanding.

To get a better overview over the room and the views offered, you can find a video at the end of this post. Beds are comfortable and equipped with exceptionally high mattresses, guest are provided with four pillows plus another feather pillow in the wardrobe – needless to say, anyone needing more will be able to get those as well. The bathroom was stocked with a more than sufficient range of shampoo, conditioner, soap and shower gel as well as a number of soft towels. Two bathrobes are ready in the wardrobe, ideal when making the way up to the roof-top pool. Furthermore, rooms are equipped with a safe, minibar, one or two television sets (depending on the room category), iron and ironing board. So guests can easily press their evening wear themselves or – of course – resort to the hotel’s laundry service.

The service:

A main factor for hiring employees at Andaz appear to be good looks. Many of the staff could easily work as models and are also extremely friendly and attentive. I got the feeling that I had been well known around the hotel for many years, no matter whether in the restaurant, during check-in or at the bar. Special requests, small requests and any other questions were quickly answered by staff. My “host” was also able and more than happy to assist me with tips for excursions, restaurant or shopping suggestions.

The location:

The hotel is located on 8401 Sunset Boulevard and thus only one block away from the famous Hollywood Boulevard. The international airport (LAX) is about 30km (19mi) from the hotel and can best be reached by taxi or a transfer arranged by the hotel.

My conclusion:

Andaz West Hollywood is an interest address when looking for a modern, chic and interesting hotel in Los Angeles. Even though the distance to the city centre is fairly far (around 16km or 10mi) it can easily be reached using either public transport and taxis. So for anyone going here for business anytime soon or simply looking for a vacation, this hotel can definitely be recommended. Stays can be booked through Hyatt’s website directly or as a package through your preferred travel agent, mine would be www.cubetravel.de.
